Electric scooters are becoming more and more common across Sweden, especially in cities. With their growing popularity comes the responsibility to follow the rules designed to keep everyone safe.
Age and Safety Requirements
At present, there is no official minimum age for riding an electric scooter in Sweden. However, there have been discussions about introducing stricter regulations, similar to Finland, where riders must be at least 15 years old.
Key safety rules include:
- Helmet use is mandatory for riders under 15 and strongly recommended for everyone.
- Passengers are not allowed — one rider per scooter.
- Lights must be used after dark, and reflective clothing or accessories are recommended.
- Ride carefully and adapt your speed to traffic and weather conditions.
- Sidewalks and pedestrian-only paths are off-limits.
- Park responsibly without blocking pedestrians or traffic.
- Never ride if you are tired, unwell, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Speed and Power Limits
An electric scooter may only be used as a bicycle if it meets certain technical requirements. If it can travel faster than 20 km/h or has a motor exceeding 250 watts, it is legally classified as a moped, not a bicycle. In that case, it cannot be used on bicycle paths.
Many electric scooters sold online or imported from abroad do not comply with Swedish regulations, so it’s important to check the specifications before purchasing.
Ultimately, the rider is responsible for making sure the scooter meets all legal requirements.
Always ride with care and respect — your safety and the safety of others should come first.
